The End Of The World
I'm pleased to finally get this image out in Sacramento Magazine’s May Issue. I started working on this idea on March 13th, just as everything was starting to change.
I'm pleased to finally get this image out in Sacramento Magazine’s May Issue. I started working on this idea on March 13th, just as everything was starting to change. I was trying to find a way to make an image about how I was feeling and what I thought was coming. On the day of the shoot Sunday March 15th, we had a window without rain for about 45 minutes. This sky was so dramatic and added to the feeling of the whole image. It's one of those times that everything came together and worked.

I recently had the pleasure of working with some of Sacramento's finest; Members of the Sacramento County Sheriff's office. I've been interested in making some portraits for them for quite some time. My friend Rich who works for the department was able to set up an afternoon for us to make some images.
My goal was to make the deputy and officers look heroic, similar to the images I made of the female fighter pilots of Athena's Voice.
I feel that it is important to come up with shoots that you assign for yourself. I've learned over the years that doing things for myself, which involve different technical and creative challenges, has helped me with my assignment work. Many times clients have asked me for images similar to ones I've done for myself. It's very risky to do new things for clients that haven't been tested and proven. I certainly don't want to go into a paid assignment, hoping my idea works. I want to have proven it out before on my own.
Special thanks to Rich Carranza for setting this all up and Skip Jones for the assistance.

An Afternoon With Chris Sullivan
I was very excited when Sacramento Magazine asked me to travel to LA to photograph Chris Sullivan from the TV show This Is Us.
I was very excited when Sacramento Magazine asked me to travel to LA to photograph Chris Sullivan from the TV show This Is Us. Taking production on location always has its challenges, which are magnified when you have to fly with your gear, making sure you have all the things you need while away. We ended up hand carrying our lights on the plane and rented stands locally in Los Angeles. Everything went smoothly, and Chris and his team were terrific to work with.
It takes a team!

For my crew, it was an all-family affair with my daughter, Savannah Engle, as 1st assistant and my daughter Victoria's brother-in-law US Army Infantry Officer Veteran Clayton Reagan as 2nd assistant. No way things would have been so smooth without their help.

On Photo Day, you can roam the Aurora ship and the grounds, while accessing all the non-restricted areas to get the perfect shot. Right now, I am limiting the number of photographers to 20. You may bring models/hairdressers/makeup artists, but will need to purchase a ticket for them. Please email me directly if you need a ticket for your talent, as there are a limited amount of discount tickets available for that purpose. Tickets are first come first serve.
If you get a sold-out message, please email me tim@englephoto.com
Session Schedule: 1/11/20 Anyone interested can come to my studio between 9 am - 12 pm for a pre-shoot planning meeting. This meeting will be a great chance to get your plan for the shoot in place. You can figure out what lighting gear you want to use. I will also go over what items I'm brining, some of which you will be able to use. Guests may bring tripods and battery-driven lights.
1/18/20 We will be starting on the ship at 10 am and should wrap-up around 2 pm-ish. It's about an hour (1:20) from my studio, and parking will be on a narrow road. Carpooling may be a good idea. Model details I am excited to have AVL IMAGE ACADEMY provide models, hair, and makeup for the shoot. I will provide a few models for general usage. I'm going to have some models dressed in clothing that will keep with the ship's style. I'll also have some models made up in a more high fashion look.
Bring water and a snack. There are restrooms, but no other services.
I will continue to monitor the weather as we grow closer to the date, I will provide updates (postponement/change in schedule) for the day of plans if the need arises.
Sacramento Magazine Best Of Issue
About two months ago the art director for Sacramento magazine came to me with a concept for the upcoming best of Sacramento issue. He wanted images with a really high saturation look. One of the things about doing photos like this is that everybody has a different idea of what high saturation looks like. The first thing we decided to do was run some test, so we were all on the same page with the look. This was so helpful in determining the saturation and color palette we wanted to keep throughout the entire project.
Sacramento Magazine “Best Of Sacramento”
About two months ago, the art director for Sacramento magazine came to me with a concept for the upcoming Best of Sacramento issue. He wanted images with a highly saturated look. One of the things about doing photos like this is that everybody has a different idea of what high saturation looks like. The first thing we decided to do was run some tests, so we were all on the same page with the look. Testing was helpful to determine the level of saturation, as well as the color palette that we wanted to keep throughout the entire project.
A little bit on the technical part; most of the images were created with the Nikon Z6. The gels were by ROSCO. A majority of the shots were tethered to my laptop so the art director could watch as we were shooting, providing feedback and direction to the individuals. Shooting images like this requires a delicate balance between color saturation and exposure. You can get higher saturation, but you run the risk of losing detail in the highlights if you're not careful. I was able to find a perfect combination, and with the help of lightroom, I was able to pull the saturation to the desired level.
The full assignment ended up being 11 separate shoots, ranging from studio still life and tabletop, to a group of three women restauranteurs. Gabriel (SacMag art director) scheduled all the various shoots at my studio, which always proves to be one of the hardest things to do with so many people. Because my studio doesn't have air conditioning throughout and the temperature was registering 102 degrees, we tried to keep most of the shoots earlier in the day.
It's gratifying to see a project like this come together and then printed in one piece. I enjoyed meeting all the wonderful subjects and making images with them.

Cars & Gels
I had a fun photo outing with a local group on Tuesday. The location had some vintage sports car. Now I am NOT a car guy and don’t really shoot many. My plan was to take 1 light and blast it from behind the car and see how the light played.
I had a fun photo outing with a local group on Tuesday. The location had some vintage sports car. Now I am NOT a car guy and don’t really shoot many. My plan was to take 1 light and blast it from behind the car and see how the light played.
For the lighting, I used 1 Phottix Indra 500 with a 7” reflector and a 20-degree grid which I had from my Paul C Buff lights. The gels are from the ROSCO “Photo Lighting Kit” #23 orange gel.
Making The Most Out Of Your Location
For the past few years, I’ve been working with Sacramento Magazine photographing the area's top attorneys. This is a yearly supplement, and on average I have about 25 firms I have to photograph in a 45-day span.
For the past few years, I’ve been working with Sacramento Magazine photographing the area's top attorneys. This is a yearly supplement, and on average I have about 25 firms I have to photograph in a 45-day span. I genuinely enjoy meeting the different attorneys, and visiting their offices. There are several challenges that come with this type of assignment. If it’s a group shot, it’s very difficult to get everybody to one place at the same time for very long. Often I only get about eight to ten minutes with the full group. And in some cases, I have to photograph the group missing someone and add that person in later. If I know this ahead of time it is definitely workable, and I can leave spaces in the group for the missing person.
The location of choice..
Another challenge is to find the best location for my client. People are always looking to have a fresh image, and for years attorneys have used their libraries, and bookshelves as a background. This has been done time and time again. I try to steer them away from this, providing them with a background more suited for their personality.
When photographing individual attorneys I try to have two locations I can work with quickly. Again these individuals are extremely busy and I often only get between eight and fifteen minutes with them. You have to assess the environment, and lighting quickly to create your plan. A few years back I started having the images sent to my iPad as I shot. This has been a huge help in selecting the final image, ensuring my client is happy with the product that I’m producing.
This week presented all of these challenges. The attorney I was photographing wasn’t going to be available at first, but then found the time last minute, giving me only a short time to get over to the firm and determine my plan. It needed to be outside at twelve noon, which is difficult light to work with. After walking around the perimeter of their office I discovered a wonderful wall, that had aged black marks on it.
Using my scrim overhead I found it created a very nice light as my base layer. I then added in my Phottix Indra 500 light with the wide-angle diffuser and grid attached.
I got the exposure that I wanted on the wall first. Then I adjusted the output of the light to match the ambient exposure, giving me the illumination desired.
I was able to make 27 images in about five minutes. From an equipment standpoint, having my lights on my portable battery pack is tremendously useful. If I had tried to find plugs for my lights it would’ve taken me much longer, and I might’ve lost time photographing the attorney.
