I am excited to wrap up the year with another cover for Sacramento magazine.
The assignment was for the "Top Doc" December issue.
The assignment on this one was to photograph two doctors, one for the cover and one for the inside. As always, Gabriel gave me good parameters to go on but left the lighting and treatment up to me.
Working on my inspiration, I looked to one of my favorite photographers Dan Winters. I love his lighting style and treatment. After I settled in on what I was going to do, I did a few lighting tests with my son Ethan. I am pleased with how it worked out.

For the two portraits, I had to have Covid compliance. I put my set in the studio's opening to minimize the need to come too far inside. It's definitely an advantage to have a large rollup door at the studio.
The final lighting set up was between two and three lights for each shot. I didn't need to light the whole body, so I was able to use smaller modifiers.

I can't emphasize enough the power in testing and working with your stuff before the actual shoot. The last thing I want to do is be messing with my lights while I'm trying to connect with my subject. All of the tech parts need to be out of your way before you push the button.

I was grateful to start having some assignments again beginning late June. It's been a long layoff. It's crazy how you lose a little bit of that muscle memory so fast. The camera is an extension of my arm and not having used it regularly. I needed a little warm-up time to get going.

At the beginning of this month, I had the assignment to cover two dental offices. The goal was to photograph how they're adapting with the new COVID compliance, as well as what clients can expect when going to the dentist.
The first office I visited was Wallace J Bellamy DMD in Elk Grove, then Dr. Stephanie Sandretti, DDS, in Roseville.
I was very impressed with both offices and the lengths they are going through to keep their clients and staff safe. I was amazed to learn that they were already doing things pre-pandemic that were in compliance now.
Clients are in for a very safe experience, and in my observation, are going to have less chance of infection at the dentist than at Costco.

I'm pleased to finally get this image out in Sacramento Magazine’s May Issue. I started working on this idea on March 13th, just as everything was starting to change.
I'm pleased to finally get this image out in Sacramento Magazine’s May Issue. I started working on this idea on March 13th, just as everything was starting to change. I was trying to find a way to make an image about how I was feeling and what I thought was coming. On the day of the shoot Sunday March 15th, we had a window without rain for about 45 minutes. This sky was so dramatic and added to the feeling of the whole image. It's one of those times that everything came together and worked.

Sacramento's finest
I had the pleasure recently of working with some of Sacramento's finest. Members of the Sacramento County Sheriff's office. I've been interested in making some portraits for them for quite some time my friend Rich who works for the department was able to set up an afternoon for us to make some images.

My goal was to make the deputy and officers look heroic, similar to the images I made of the female fighter pilots of Athena's Voice.

I feel that it is important to come up with shoots that you assign for yourself. I've learned over the years that doing things for myself, which involve different technical and creative challenges, has helped me with my assignment work. Many times clients have asked me for images similar to ones I've done for myself. It's very risky to do new things for clients that haven't been tested and proven. I certainly don't want to go into a paid assignment, hoping my idea works. I want to have proven it out before on my own.

An Afternoon With Chris Sullivan
I was very excited when Sacramento Magazine asked me to travel to LA to photograph Chris Sullivan from the TV show This Is Us.
I was very excited when Sacramento Magazine asked me to travel to LA to photograph Chris Sullivan from the TV show This Is Us. Taking production on location always has its challenges, which are magnified when you have to fly with your gear, making sure you have all the things you need while away. We ended up hand carrying our lights on the plane and rented stands locally in Los Angeles. Everything went smoothly, and Chris and his team were terrific to work with.

The New Phottix M200R LED Panels
I recently had the opportunity to test out the new Phottix M200R LED panels and WOW what a light!
I recently had the opportunity to test out the new Phottix M200R LED panels.
For the most part, I use strobes in my work with the occasional LED panel for ambient fill. I also use a lot of colors and gels in my work. So the idea of a little LED panel that has a variety of colors that can be changed very rapidly is intriguing.
On the day that I received the panels, I had a shoot scheduled, so it was the perfect opportunity to put the LEDs to the test. They arrived fully charged and ready to go, which made me happy. The instructions and operations were very straightforward and easy to figure out. I love the idea that you have two mounting sockets so you can mount the panel vertically or horizontally. The back panel readout tells you how much power is left, as well as what mode you are shooting in. After shooting for an hour and a half, the LED indicated that I had about 40 minutes of battery life left.
After just one shoot, I became very versed in using them. I definitely will be keeping the Phottix LED panels in my bag for future shoots.

On Photo Day, you can roam the Aurora ship and the grounds, while accessing all the non-restricted areas to get the perfect shot. Right now, I am limiting the number of photographers to 20. You may bring models/hairdressers/makeup artists, but will need to purchase a ticket for them. Please email me directly if you need a ticket for your talent, as there are a limited amount of discount tickets available for that purpose. Tickets are first come first serve.

Session Schedule: 1/11/20 Anyone interested can come to my studio between 9 am - 12 pm for a pre-shoot planning meeting. This meeting will be a great chance to get your plan for the shoot in place. You can figure out what lighting gear you want to use. I will also go over what items I'm brining, some of which you will be able to use. Guests may bring tripods and battery-driven lights.
1/18/20 We will be starting on the ship at 10 am and should wrap-up around 2 pm-ish. It's about an hour (1:20) from my studio, and parking will be on a narrow road. Carpooling may be a good idea. Model details I am excited to have AVL IMAGE ACADEMY provide models, hair, and makeup for the shoot. I will provide a few models for general usage. I'm going to have some models dressed in clothing that will keep with the ship's style. I'll also have some models made up in a more high fashion look.
Bring water and a snack. There are restrooms, but no other services.
I will continue to monitor the weather as we grow closer to the date, I will provide updates (postponement/change in schedule) for the day of plans if the need arises.
